About the CD

Sounds of the Ocean convincingly recreates the crests and troughs of distant ocean surf. The spectrum was carefully shaped and tested in real-world situations to mask undesired noise, while being as unobtrusive as possible. The gentle rhythms of this album are subtle enough to be played when alertness is required, masking noise in a loud office or home environment, assisting work, sleep, meditation, and even with relief from tinnitus.

The album is in one track, with a 15-second fade-in and fade-out, which makes it perfect for looping on an MP3 or CD player.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's white noise?

White noise is a term for a random audio signal, such as you might hear on a radio that's not tuned to any particular station, or a TV channel showing static. To the human ear, the frequencies are concentrated in the high-end, which makes pure white noise quite aggravating after several minutes.

What's pink noise?

Pink noise is white noise that has been filtered to contain an approximately equal amount of energy (or noise) in each octave. In pink noise, a low-frequency range such as 100-200 Hz has as much energy as the much larger and higher-frequency band of 10,000-20,000 Hz. This means that pink noise, in comparison to white noise, is much more pleasing to the ear, and sounds closer to natural phenomena such as wind or ocean surf. Once the word gets out, perhaps I'll change the name of the site...

What's a spectrum?

In this context, a spectrum is a description of the frequency content of a sound over a duration of time. Most broadly, you could describe a spectrum as having a lot of bass (low frequencies) or treble (high frequencies).

What's on the album?

The album is one track, over 73 minutes long, with a 15-second fade-in and fade-out. It consists of uninterrupted, "shaped" pink noise in full stereo. There are two components: the main track sounds like distant ocean surf, while a secondary track slowly undulates on top, sounding like nearer surf. Give it a listen, and let your ears decide!
